Vietnamese and Venezuelan heads of state hold talks

On November 21, Vietnamese State President Nguyễn Minh Triết held talks with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez.

During the talks, the two countries’ leaders highlighted their commitment to building up a framework for the comprehensive and fair partnership of mutual benefits, paving the way for the more vigorous development in each country, contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the two regions and the world.
The two leaders were unanimous in exchanging delegations at all echelons and in all sectors with a view to fostering mutual understanding, exploring opportunities for cooperation in such areas as energy, oil, education and training, finance, agriculture, construction, information and communications, and sea transport. President Hugo Chavez made a decision to launch a US $200-million fund in order to facilitate joint projects between the two countries.
Sharing opinions on international and regional issues of common concern, both leaders vowed to assist each other on global and multinational forums, including the UN, Non-Aligned Movement, East Asia-Latin America Cooperation Forum, ASEAN and MERCOSUR.
After the talks, the host President conferred the Vietnamese leader with Venezuela’s highest-grade medal named after Hero Simon Bolivar, in order to “pay respect to great contributions and sacrifices made by the Vietnamese people for the world’s struggle for national salvation.”

On this occasion, 15 agreements were inked, including the Investment Encouragement and Protection Agreement, Anti-Double Tax Agreement, Supplementary Agreement on Agricultural Cooperation, Agreement between the Venezuelan National Petroleum Company and PetroVietnam to build a petroleum joint-venture with the productivity of 200,000 barrels/day in Venezuela, and other contracts on producing automobiles, motorbikes, household electric goods, concrete, plastic products and garments.
